Back in April 2025 I visited Abbey Road Studios in London to see my super-talented audio engineering friend, Sherry Yeh. We had a bit of a tour and ended up recording a couple of demos...

I first worked with Sherry in January 2024 when she was doing a Master's degree in Music Production and Audio Cultures at York University. The Corsairs were lucky enough to get a free recording session when she needed a band to record as part of her course, so we went in and recorded Blues and the Brown.

It turned out so good, that I returned a few months later to record the Michelangelo EP. We also worked together, alongside Ade Barwick of Church Lane Studios, on the live recording of Emperor's New Clothes, which also featured on the EP.

After leaving York, Sherry moved to London and started a job as a runner at the world-famous studios. A few months later she got in touch and asked if we'd like to go down and have a tour of the studio. After a couple of false starts we settled on a quiet Saturday morning, so with guitar in hand I caught the early train with my friend and long-time musical collaborator Matthew Lilley.

In the Abbey Road garden/cafe

We arrived about 11am and had a quick brew with Sherry in the garden of the Abbey Road cafe whilst we waited for Ade to arrive.

We had a quick tour of the studio, it's really quite big and very impressive. The walls are lined with photos of all the musical legends that have recorded there. We couldn't get in the famous Beatles Studio 2 as it was in use, but we did get to see where Pink Floyd recorded Dark Side of the Moon.

We then decamped to The Front Room studio to have a play and record a couple of quick demos on very expensive vintage microphones. We didn't have much time so we wanted to keep the recording process a simple as possible.

Recording...

Mr O'Brien

The first track we put down was called Mr O'Brien. I recorded my vocal and guitar at the same time, no messing around with a click...just a single take. Matthew added some subtle guitar parts over the top and the drone with a Nord.

When The Wind Blows

With a hour or so before we had leave to get our train back, we decided to try another track When The Wind Blows, with my vocal and guitar going down first, as before followed by Matthew adding some piano.

A big thanks to Sherry for inviting us and to Ade for helping out and and creating the mixes. We had a top time...hope to get back there again one day.
